The Peruvian Minister of Defense, Daniel Barragán, presented his resignation to the President this Saturday through a letter in which he referred to «personal reasons» and thanked Pedro Castillo for the opportunity.

«I express my deep gratitude to the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, to the general commanders of the Air Force, Navy, Army of Peru; and to the military and civilian personnel of the Defense sector, for their support and teamwork to achieve the strategic objectives of the sector,» can be read in the letter disseminated through Twitter.

Barragan had assumed the position last September 23 to replace Richard Tineo who assumed the homologous position in the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The resignation has caused different congressmen to talk that Pedro Castillo is preparing a coup d’état that Barragán has not been willing to support, something that Castillo has categorically denied and has stated that his Executive has no intention of closing the Parliament in order to avoid a vacancy motion.

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers has also been quick to deny these rumors. «The Government of the people is respectful of democratic principles, that is why we call on all good Peruvians, not to fall into speculations about a presumed breakdown of the constitutional order. The Executive reiterates its absolute respect for all the powers of the State,» he said via Twitter.
