Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has questioned recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who advocated the need to offer Russia «guarantees» of security while negotiating an end to the war with Ukraine.
«In the current situation, what we need are guarantees specifically against Russia and this applies both to Ukraine and other countries,» the head of the Finnish diplomacy has assessed this Monday at a press conference, reports Yle channel.
Haavisto stressed that Russia is not only acting against the international political chessboard, invading and attacking Ukraine, but also playing a leading role in other conflicts in countries such as Georgia.
Minister Haavisto’s words are in response to an interview last week to French television by President Macron after meeting with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, in Washington, in which he stated that Russia should be offered security guarantees to encourage it to return to the negotiating table with the Ukrainian authorities.
