At least one person has been killed and three injured in an explosion at a police station in the city of Bandung, capital of Indonesia’s West Java province, in what is suspected to have been a suicide bombing.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday at around 08.30 hours (02.30 Spanish peninsular time) at the police station in Astanaanyar district, after a man tried to gain access with a knife.
«Members have tried to stop (the man wielding a bladed weapon), then there was an explosion. The perpetrator carrying the bomb has died in the lobby of the Police station. Three of our members were injured and are now being treated at the National Police Hospital,» Bandung Police Chief Kombespol Aswin told Kompas TV.
Two hours later, another explosion was heard around the location of the first incident, which is cordoned off by the police, reports the Indonesian news agency Antara.
Police have urged residents and journalists to stay away from the area of the incident. The governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, has also called for calm.
«Stay calm, the police are taking charge of the situation,» he said Wednesday during a visit to the barracks involved in the incident, as reported by the media.
«My message once again is to remain calm. The situation is under control. The West Java Regional Police will issue a statement,» he added.
