Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock has prevailed over his Republican challenger Herschel Walker in the runoff of the U.S. midterm congressional elections for the state of Georgia.
The Democratic senator’s victory will give the Democrats an absolute majority in the Senate, after two years in a tied division for which the vice president, Kamala Harris, and also speaker of the upper house, had had to cast tie-breaking votes.
In the first round on November 8, Warnock beat Walker by just 9 tenths.
Warnock was one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators in the election, but Walker has turned out to be a weak candidate, with mistakes and contradictions such as rejecting abortion despite the discovery that he paid for an abortion for an ex-girlfriend or unconditionally supporting Donald Trump.
