Five activists from the Last Generation organization were arrested Wednesday after throwing white paint on the facade of the La Scala theater in the Italian city of Milan in protest against the government’s environmental policies.
Shortly before the start of the ‘prima’, the lyrical season, the activists have indicated that they «will not stop until they receive answers from the Government on two issues: the dismantling of coal plants by 2025 and the commitment to stop building thermal power plants».
Both the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, and the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, are expected to attend the premiere of the opera ‘Boris Godunov’, by the Russian composer Modest Petrovic Musorgski, according to information from the newspaper ‘Corriere della Sera’.
The police, who were quick to intervene, arrested all the activists, who insisted that the fulfillment of their demands «is the only way to guarantee the future of their children».
The action has lasted about half an hour and those present have been transferred to a police station to undergo the relevant controls. «We have decided to stain the facade of La Scala with paint to ask the politicians attending tonight’s show to intervene and save the population,» they asserted, as reported by the Adnkronos agency.
«Instead of taking the necessary measures to safeguard the future of Italy from drought and climate disasters, politics closes ranks to enjoy a show that is only for a few, as is the possibility of being saved from disaster,» they have concluded.
