Burkina Faso security forces have announced the recovery of control of the town of Solenzo, located in the province of Banwa (west) and in the hands of terrorists for months, after fighting that has resulted in the «neutralization» of dozens of suspects.

According to information published by the Burkinabe state television channel RTB, the flag is once again flying in the town after the operation, which has also allowed the security forces to destroy several bases used by the jihadists.

The announcement came after the head of the military junta, Ibrahim Traoré, assured over the weekend that «the fight for total independence began a few weeks ago», after denouncing that part of the country «is occupied» due to the deterioration of security because of the operations of jihadist groups.

Traoré led in September an uprising which was considered a ‘palace coup’ by a sector of the military junta confronting the until then leader of the junta, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, took place in the face of the continuous deterioration of the security situation and the attacks by jihadist groups.

Burkina Faso has generally experienced a significant increase in insecurity since 2015, with attacks by both Al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates, leading to a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees to other countries in the region.
