At least a dozen people have died and another twenty are injured of varying degrees as a result of a fire that broke out last Saturday night in the tunnel of the Afghan Salang pass, local official sources have informed the Tolo News channel.
The Salang Pass is the main route through the country’s northern mountains, connecting the capital, Kabul, with the province of Parwan and into Pakistan, thanks in part to this 2.5-kilometer-long Soviet-era tunnel.
According to the spokesman of the Taliban Ministry of Infrastructure, Hamidullah Musba, the fire is already under control but the number of victims could increase in the last hours due to the seriousness of some of the wounded.
The Taliban authorities are investigating the causes of the fire, which started at around 9 p.m. on Saturday and of which no further details have emerged.
