Scotland’s chief minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has declared her intention to discuss the new episode of her drive for independence from the United Kingdom at the special conference her Scottish Nationalist party will hold in March 2023 in Edinburgh.
Supporters of independence have recently suffered a setback, with the U.K. Supreme Court ruling in November that Scotland could not hold a referendum without London’s approval.
Following this verdict, plans to hold an independence referendum next year are shelved for the time being. In the event, Sturgeon had already announced that she would consider the next British general election as a ‘de facto’ referendum.
«A special conference will take place in Edinburgh on March 19 to discuss and decide the way forward to secure independence following the UK Supreme Court decision,» Sturgeon made known on her Twitter account.
According to a poll, Scottish support for secession from the UK has increased following the ruling.
According to a recent survey by the opinion polling institute Panelbase commissioned by the ‘Sunday Times’, almost half of the Scots surveyed (49%) declared themselves in favor of independence from their country, three percentage points more than a few months ago. According to the poll, 45% would vote No and the rest were undecided.
Sturgeon wants to take her country out of the United Kingdom and return it to the European Union under the argument that the Brexit has changed the situation so much that a new referendum should be held. In 2014, a majority of Scots had decided against independence.
