The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has assured this Sunday that the Mexican government has granted political asylum to the wife and son of former president Pedro Castillo.
Boluarte explained that the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, had informed her in the previous days of the decision of the Executive led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
«A few days ago I was informed by the Foreign Minister (Ana Cecilia Gervasi) that the Mexican State had already given political asylum and what I told her is to proceed in accordance with the law, everything that frames the legal framework,» Boluarte said in an interview to the program ‘Panorama’.
Gervasi has pointed out to the president that the investigations involving the former first lady, Lilia Paredes, and her sister, Yenifer Paredes, for alleged criminal organization, money laundering and aggravated collusion are not an impediment for them to avail themselves of this benefit.
«What the Chancellor tells me is that the investigation that is taking place in the Attorney General’s Office should not have to interfere in the issue of a probable political asylum», he said.
The president has also expressed her rejection of interference by foreign governments, in reference to the joint letter from Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia and Mexico, in support of Castillo.
«We have brought our ambassadors in consultation because we will not allow any foreign country or government to interfere in the Peruvian State. We will have to ask them why they are protecting him,» he said.
«If Pedro Castillo is no longer president now, it is because he has carried out a coup d’état and he is being captured for this fraudulent act, and he has also broken the constitutional order,» he added.
