Peru's
Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Cecilia Gervasi – MINISTERIO DE EXTERIORES DE PERÚ

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has declared the Mexican ambassador to the Andean country, Pablo Monroy, persona ‘non grata’, urging him to leave the country within three days, alleging «interference in his government».

The Peruvian Minister, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, has pointed out that the Government has taken this decision «due to the reiterated expressions of the highest authorities of that country regarding the political situation in Peru».

«Such expressions constitute an interference in the internal affairs of the country and, therefore, are in violation of the principle of non-intervention,» reads a statement from the ministerial portfolio.

Thus, Gervasi has communicated that he has delivered a diplomatic note to Monroy «by which he is notified that he has 72 hours to leave the national territory», in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed this Tuesday that some relatives of the former Peruvian president had received political asylum in the Mexican Embassy in Lima.

«The asylum was already granted because they are in Mexican territory, that is to say, they are in our Embassy (…) It is an independent sovereign decision of Mexico», defended the head of Mexican diplomacy.
