The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has regretted this Saturday the «violence» registered in the protests unleashed after the arrest of former president Pedro Castillo after he tried to dissolve the Congress to avoid the vote of a new motion of censure and has called for dialogue to solve the crisis.
«It is not easy for me to say Merry Christmas, because I know there are many needs in homes, there is much inequality,» Boluarte said in a speech to the nation, before stressing that he seeks to «work in peace, in calm» to address the political and social situation in the South American country, as reported by the Peruvian state news agency, Andina.
Thus, he pointed out that he would have liked to start his government «without that violence, without those human losses that hurt me» and reiterated his condolences to the families of the 30 people killed in the repression of the protests. «He reiterated his condolences to the families of the 30 people killed in the repression of the protests, and said he would have liked this situation of violence that hurts my heart.
Boluarte called on the population to demonstrate peacefully and warned against «groups that seek to use them to generate violence in the country». In this sense, he asked «what does it solve to want to take over airports and burn institutions such as the Judiciary and the Public Ministry in the face of the needs of health, education, water, agriculture».
«It does not solve anything», stressed the president, who appealed to «start working to solve the problems that have not been solved». «Let’s bring tranquility to the homeland. If there is peace and tranquility, more people will come to serve the country and with that investment we can capitalize the economy and with that economy solve the problem of education», she argued.
«Why take roads? At some point I went out to protest for demands that were just, but we never blocked roads and we did not set fire to institutions», he stressed, while he asked those people who resort to violence «to show their faces and say what they are demanding».
In this way, the Peruvian president emphasized that the country «has had a hard time getting out of more than 20 years of horror and violence». «Why generate this chaos and violence again? Let us seek peace, the consolidation of our homeland», she said, before pointing out that among the problems she is most concerned about are education, health, housing and infrastructure.
Peru has been the scene of protests for more than two weeks following the dismissal and subsequent arrest of Castillo, accused of attempting a «coup d’état» by dissolving Parliament and decreeing a government of exception. The situation has led to protests whose main demands are the removal of Boluarte from the Presidency and the calling of new elections.
