U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has congratulated Maoist communist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal following his appointment as Prime Minister after the elections in Nepal.
«The United States congratulates the people of Nepal on successful democratic elections and Pushpa Kamal Dahal and his coalition partners on the formation of a new government,» reads a State Department statement.
Blinken has assured that «Nepal’s commitment to democracy is an example for countries around the world», while he has indicated that he «looks forward to supporting» the Asian country in «deepening its democratic traditions in accordance with the will of the Nepalese people».
The Secretary of State also stressed that the Biden Administration is «proud to have strong and enduring ties with Nepal».
He added that he will continue to «support» the Nepalese government «in advancing issues of mutual importance,» such as «achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth, strengthening Nepal’s climate resilience, and upholding democracy and respect for human rights.»
Blinken’s remarks come after Kamal Dahal was sworn in as Prime Minister of Nepal following his appointment as Chief Executive by the country’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.
The communist leader, 68 years old, will hold for the third time the Head of Government, the last time five years ago, and puts an end to the political impasse after the elections of October 20, where he won 32 deputies and a discreet third position.
The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-UML) of former Prime Minister Sharma Oli is one of the main formations, together with other minority parties, which have supported Dahal as the new head of government.
Thus, the historic communist leader has the backing of 169 of the 275 members of the Nepalese Parliament, although he will have to overcome a question of confidence of the Legislature scheduled for next week.
