The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has welcomed the fact that diplomacy has made it possible to «lower tensions» in northern Kosovo, with special recognition of the «responsible leadership» of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

«Violence cannot be a solution,» said Borrell, who called for further progress in order to achieve «urgent progress» in the dialogue, in which the EU is acting as mediator. The head of European diplomacy has also thanked the contribution of the United States and NATO in the latest escalation.

Vucic announced late Wednesday the removal of barricades set up in the northern part of Kosovo, where tensions have soared in recent months, initially over the potential entry into force of a new license plate regulation. Vucic warned that removing the blockades would still take 24 to 48 hours.

In fact, Kosovar police reported Thursday the burning of several vehicles at one of these barricades, in the Mitrovica area, according to Kosovapress. Local authorities have ruled out that this incident has caused personal injuries.

On the other hand, former Kosovo Serb policeman Dejan Pantic, whose arrest on December 10 sparked further tensions, was granted permission on Wednesday to leave prison and remain under house arrest while investigations against him are progressing.
