The head of Venezuela’s ‘interim government’, Juan Guaidó, has postponed the ordinary session of the National Assembly that was scheduled to decide this Thursday on the extension of his mandate.
The session of the National Assembly that had been proposed for this December 29 has been postponed «attending the criteria of the members of the board of directors and deputies» for January 3, 2023, with the aim of achieving «a broader agreement for the country», the assembly account announced on Twitter.
The Venezuelan opposition leader has affirmed that «in response to the public requests» made by several deputies of the National Assembly, he assumes the suspension of the session, also from his account in the aforementioned social network.
This decision takes place in the midst of tensions and discontent expressed by opposition parties that do not see Guaidó as a solid candidate for reelection.
In this sense, some of the main Venezuelan opposition parties called last week through a statement for the termination of the «interim government» of opposition leader Juan Guaidó, after considering that almost four years after his proclamation he has not fulfilled the expected objectives.
The leader of the Primero Justicia party, Alfonso Marquina, held a press conference speaking on behalf of 69 (of the 112) opposition deputies who supported Guaidó’s proclamation in 2019. These belong to the main opposition parties: Acción Democrática (AD), Primero Justicia (PJ), Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and Movimiento por Venezuela (MPV).
«The interim government is not the raison d’être of the democratic struggle, it was a necessary instrument at the time, but today we are appointing a commission for the protection of all assets», stated Marquina, and highlighted the duty of all to «assume responsibilities», since «the figure of the internal government does not figure to achieve the objectives in Venezuela», as picked up by the Globovisión network.
Juan Guaidó, who came to be recognized by more than fifty countries as «interim president» in 2019 by self-proclaiming himself with such distinction after not recognizing the results of the 2018 presidential election, has seen how his political weight abroad has been waning every year, as well as his leadership within the internal opposition to the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
