After Republican Congressman George Santos confessed that he had lied about his previous job and university studies on his résumé, it has now been questioned whether his mother died as a result of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, as he had claimed.
In statements made on his midterm campaign website, the representative-elect for New York stated that his mother had lost her life a few years after the September 11, 2001 attacks due to cancer.
«George’s mother was in her office in the South Tower on September 11, 2001, when the terrible events of that day took place. She survived the tragic events of 9/11, but passed away a few years later when she lost her battle with cancer,» reads Santos’ campaign website.
Likewise, in response to a Twitter message posted in 2021 by a user, who stated that «9/11 was a victimless crime,» Santos asserted: «9/11 took the life of my mother… so I’m blocking you so I never have to read this again.»
However, months later, on December 23, the congressman stated that this year marked the fifth anniversary of his mother’s death, indicating that she had died in 2016.
The scrutiny comes as Santos faces rebuke from within his party and the Democratic Party after admitting that he made up details of his education, job and personal background while running to represent a New York district.
Meanwhile, the congressman made claims about his family history that could not be proven, such as that his mother’s parents were Ukrainian Jews who fled the Nazi Holocaust to Brazil. However, records obtained by ‘The New York Times’ showed that his mother’s parents were born in Brazil and had no Ukrainian or Jewish ancestors.
Following his confession, the Democratic Party has called for his resignation, claiming that he has let voters down. In addition, they have warned the Republicans that if Santos does not resign the seat, the Republican Party should call for a vote to expel him.
However, the U.S. Attorney for Nassau County in New York City, Anne Donnelly, announced Wednesday that she will open an investigation against the Republican congressman.
«The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies related to Congressman-elect (George) Santos are nothing short of astounding,» Donnelly said in a statement, stressing that the residents of Nassau County — for which Congressman Santos was elected on Nov. 8 — should have «an honest and responsible representative,» according to The Hill.
