The Mexican government has announced the acquisition of the Mexicana de Aviación brand for 817 million pesos, about 40 million euros, more than twelve years after the airline stopped flying. The objective is to resume flights under the command of the Ministry of Defense.
Now the government is acquiring the brand and the airline’s former facilities, as reported by the leader of the Association of Retirees, Workers and Former Workers of Mexicana Aviation (AJTEAM), Fausto Guerrero, in statements to the Mexican newspaper ‘La Jornada’.
The agreement was reached on Friday afternoon at a meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) with the participation of labor organizations and labor authorities, as well as the bankruptcy trustee.
«Finally Mexicana will take flight again, managed by the Sedena -Ministry of Defense-. We accepted the President’s (Andrés Manuel López Obrador) offer for the whole package: for the brand, a training center and two buildings, one in Guadalajara and the other in Mexico City. The offer was for almost 817 million pesos,» said Guerrero.
The amount of the transaction «is considered as part of the liquidation of the former workers, who were originally 8,500 workers and 650 retirees». «The awards mark an indebtedness of some 9,000 million. Evidently, given the circumstance that there are not enough assets to cover the debt, these 817 million will be distributed among the former employees,» he said.
Guerrero expressed his joy for the fact that «Mexicana will fly again under its own name and will remain in Mexican hands». The President’s idea is to start operations perhaps in December 2023. With this process, Mexicana is destined to take flight again», he reiterated.
Mexicana’s last flight departed from Mexico City International Airport to Toronto, Canada, on August 28, 2010.
