Hong Kong Police Commissioner Raymond Siu said Sunday that «fake news» about the Hong Kong government or the police itself should be cleared up within two hours «to avoid confusion».
Siu has warned in an interview with Hong Kong radio RTHK that the spread of such fake news had a «big impact» during the 2019 protests and that then «the Police were not prepared.» Now, he assures, «we have learned our lesson.»
He has also stressed that the Police is working to improve its relationship with the population. «Since the social unrest of 2019 we have tried to reconnect with citizens, particularly with those who have outstanding issues with the Police,» he has explained. «We have been able to see improvements… I am satisfied, but we still have work to do,» he added.
Siu has defended on the other hand that society must give a second chance, a «hope», to detained adolescents, but this will require the collaboration of families, teachers and also social workers.
Asked whether there is still room for protests in Hong Kong after the imposition of the National Security Law in 2020, Siu stressed that the freedom to assemble and protest is guaranteed by the Basic Law, but the risk of each call will be assessed individually before its approval.
