U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Monday that the Biden Administration has not received any request from the Brazilian government to extradite former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is in the United States.
«So far we have not received any official request from the Brazilian government related to this issue,» he said at a press conference, adding that when there is news on the matter they will report on it, as reported by Bloomberg.
So far, the Biden Administration has not specified what kind of visa Bolsonaro has or if there are intentions to extradite him. «I have to proceed with extreme caution in terms of how I talk about him because of the legal issues and precedents involved,» he has indicated.
Several U.S. congressmen have spoken out on the matter. Among them, progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called on her official Twitter account to «stop harboring» the former Brazilian president in the country.
Bolsonaro was admitted this Monday to a hospital in the state of Florida, in the extreme southeastern United States, after complaining of severe abdominal pain. The former president was the victim of a stabbing in the abdomen during the 2018 election campaign. Following this attack, he has had to undergo up to four surgeries.
