The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, has reproached the new Iranian ambassador in Rome, Mohammad Reza Saburi, for the «brutal repression» and death sentences of some of those attending the demonstrations called in recent weeks in Iran in protest at the death in police custody of the young Mahsa Amini.
According to a statement issued by the Italian Presidency, Mattarella expressed not only the «firm condemnation» of the European country, but also his «personal indignation» at the latest events in Iran, which have earned criticism and sanctions from a large part of the international community.
At the same time, Mattarella urged Reza Saburi to convey to the Iranian authorities the need to «put an immediate end to the violence directed against the population», as reported by the Italian news channel Rai News.
Mattarella has received this Wednesday the new Iranian ambassador in Rome for the presentation of his credentials, a matter that also raised controversy at the end of 2022, when Rome summoned Reza Saburi for being late in delivering the documentation.
