Ninety-three percent of Brazilians condemn the assault on the three branches of government perpetrated on January 8, according to a survey conducted by Datafolha consulting firm and reported by the newspaper O Globo.
The level of acceptance of the assault in which the Armed Forces were urged to carry out a coup d’état against Lula de Silva’s government is only three percent, a figure that increases among Bolsonaro’s voters, up to 10 percent.
Moreover, 77 percent of those polled believe that those involved in the anti-democratic acts will be held accountable before the Brazilian Justice, which has already begun to order the arrest of some public officials, such as the Brasilia Police chief and Bolsonaro’s former minister Anderson Torres.
Also, 42 percent of respondents have a high degree of optimism that the assailants will get a severe sentence, while 35 percent expect a light one. Likewise, 17 percent foresee general impunity and six percent do not know what to answer.
In this sense, there is a greater variety of opinions as to whether all those involved in the robbery should go to jail. Forty-six percent of Brazilians support the idea, while 15 percent believe that most, but not all, should go. Another 26 percent believe that «only a few» should go to prison, according to the survey.
Public opinion is also more inclined to punish the people who financed buses and materials for the assault on the three branches of government. For 77 percent of respondents, these people should be arrested. Among Bolsonaro voters, 37 percent do not want punishment, although the majority (56 percent) within that group do.
Still, very few (four percent) Brazilians say they do not know what happened in Brasília last Sunday, while the vast majority of the country knows what happened.
The survey interviewed 1,214 citizens over 16 years of age and the margin of error is estimated at approximately three percentage points.
