The chief minister of the Australian state of New South Wales, Dominic Perrottet, has apologized for dressing up as a Nazi officer during a party for his 21st birthday almost two decades ago.
«I am deeply ashamed of what I did. I sincerely regret the hurt and pain it will cause people in our state. Especially to members of the Jewish community who survived the Holocaust, veterans and their families. I apologize for that terrible mistake,» said Perrottet, 40.
The official revealed that he wore the Nazi uniform to a costume ball held when he turned 21 and that he was «not aware» that any photographs had been taken of him in the costume, according to ABC television.
Thus, he has pointed out that he was «naive» and did not understand the true meaning of his actions. However, he assured that he had had a «good conversation» with members of the Jewish community about the use of this uniform.
