At least four military personnel have been killed and three more wounded in an ambush on a military convoy in Kwala, on the outskirts of Bamako, the country’s capital.
The attack was perpetrated at around 9:30 a.m. near the town of Kolokani, about 100 kilometers from Bamako, according to the Malijet news portal. The ambush also left two military vehicles damaged.
Although this armed attack has not been claimed by any group, it could be the work of the Al Qaeda group’s affiliate in Mali. The Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM) is also present in the country.
Mali and the rest of the Sahel countries have experienced an upsurge in violence, both jihadist violence at the hands of groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and inter-community violence, which has led France and the G5 Sahel countries – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger – to step up their operations.
