Ukrainian Presidential Advisor Oleksiy Arestovich announced his resignation Tuesday after suggesting that the projectile that hit a residential building in the city of Dnipro had been shot down by Ukraine’s air defense systems, a claim he described as «a fundamental error.»
«I have written a letter of resignation. I want to show an example of civilized behavior. A fundamental mistake, resignation,» he has said on his account on the social network Facebook, after recognizing a «serious mistake» in his statements. «I sincerely apologize to the victims and their relatives, to the residents of Dnipro and all those who were deeply hurt by a premature and erroneous version of the reason for the Russian missile attack on a residential building,» he has explained.
He has also defended that his words «did not cause legal or reputational consequences for Ukraine» and regretted that «those who used this issue have specific goals.» «Moscow seeks to weaken Ukraine’s information influence, including on Russians,» he concluded.
The attack on the building has resulted in 44 dead, as confirmed Tuesday by the State Emergency Service (SES), which has also indicated that the search and rescue work has been completed in the area.
Ukraine has used this shelling as an example of the abuses committed by Russia during the conflict, with menages of regret shared also with its main international partners. In contrast, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied on Monday that the collapse was due to a Russian missile, claiming that Moscow never attacks civilian targets.
