The head of the Liberal Party (PL), Valdemar Costa Neto, has promised Jair Bolsonaro and his wife, Michelle, «ministerial» salaries once they return from the United States and exculpated him of the coup acts of January 8, recalling that he has been «silent since the defeat in the elections».
Costa Neto has not only exonerated Bolsonaro of those violent acts, but also the followers of the former president of whom he has said that they did not participate in the violent acts that took place inside the headquarters of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court.
«The real bolsonarista doesn’t like that. He was there asking not to break anything. There were infiltrated extremists,» he said in an interview to CBN, in which he also blamed the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, for being in charge of security at the Esplanade of the Ministries.
Costa Neto also said he felt «surprised» after the discovery in the house of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres of a draft of a decree to reverse the results of the elections, despite revealing that several proposals were circulated among Bolsonarism after the triumph of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Regarding Bolsonaro, Costa Neto has confirmed that upon his return from the United States he will receive a «minister’s» salary, the same fate will befall his wife, whom the party will charge with «touring Brazil» to «attract women to politics».
The PL had conditioned an eventual remuneration to Bolsonaro to his return from the United States, where he is expected to remain until the end of January. The former president traveled to Florida last December 30, thus avoiding participating in the inauguration of President Lula da Silva.
The PL leader has also promised a responsible opposition in the next legislature and that he does not rule out voting in favor of Lula’s government proposals if they are considered to be in the national interest. «We will not make a radical opposition. We are a right-wing party, but we do not want Brazil to go backwards,» he has said.
