The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned on Saturday the violence and «disproportionate use of force» by security forces in response to protests against President Dina Boluarte in Peru.
In the last few hours, half a hundred people have been confirmed dead in the riots, so «the European Union regrets the enormous number of victims since the beginning of the protests».
«Peaceful social protest respectful of the rule of law is legitimate in a democratic society. The EU reiterates its condemnation of the widespread acts of violence and also of the disproportionate use of force by the security forces,» the department headed by Borrell said in a statement.
The text also highlights the recent visit to Peru by a delegation of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) «to observe the human rights situation in the context of the current institutional crisis and social protests».
Brussels «trusts that national institutions will investigate and bring to justice those responsible for human rights abuses or violations». «The ongoing social and political crises must be addressed with full respect for the constitutional order, the rule of law and human rights,» the EU added.
For all these reasons, Brussels urges the Government and «all political actors» to «take urgent measures to restore calm and ensure an inclusive dialogue with the participation of civil society and affected communities as a way out of the crisis.»
