Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office filed charges on Monday against another 54 individuals for the January 8 assault on the headquarters of Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brasilia, bringing the total number of defendants to 98.
All of them were arrested at the camp set up by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro in front of the Brazilian Armed Forces headquarters in the capital, reports the Brazilian network Globo.
They are accused before the Federal Supreme Court of the crimes of criminal association and incitement to crime for encouraging the Armed Forces to act against the constitutional powers.
«There was an evident structure to guarantee the permanence and stability» of the demonstrators calling for a coup d’état, explains the coordinator of the Strategic Group to Combat Antidemocratic Acts, deputy attorney general Carlos Frederico Santos.
The plenary of the Federal Supreme Court will decide whether to admit this complaint and whether, as requested by the Prosecutor’s Office, to replace the preventive imprisonment of these 54 people by precautionary measures such as the prohibition of access to social networks, contact with the other investigated or a minimum distance of 500 meters from any military installation.
