Bulgaria has recalled for consultations its ambassador to North Macedonia, Angel Angelov, to learn first-hand about «the serious situation» of the rights of Bulgarians in this country due to the increase of outrages and hate crimes committed against them in recent months.
The aim of this consultation is to discuss mechanisms to stop this «dangerous trend» and the increased pressure on Bulgarian citizens in North Macedonia, as well as new perspectives to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Among those hate crimes referred to by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry is the «arson attack» on the Ivan Mihailov cultural center in the southern city of Bitola in June 2022, as well as three «consecutive attacks», including one with a gun, on the headquarters of the Tsar Boris III organization in Ohrid five months later.
He denounced that these and other acts, such as the «brutal attack» against Hristian Pendikov, secretary of the Tsar Boris III organization, are in addition to the «aggressive anti-Bulgarian campaign» that is taking place in North Macedonia, which in November passed a «discriminatory» law limiting the presence of Bulgarian organizations and foundations within the country.
