The Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the release of 192 people who were arrested this weekend during the police operation at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), in Lima.
«Having completed the proceedings at the police headquarters and having received the corresponding police report, the provincial criminal prosecutor has ordered the release of 192 people, with one person remaining detained for having requesitoria,» reads a statement.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that it has ordered the initiation of preliminary proceedings for the alleged commission of crimes against patrimony – aggravated misappropriation and damages – to the detriment of the aforementioned university.
Hours before, the Ombudsman’s Office had requested «to resolve in a timely manner (the) habeas corpues of the people detained in the UNMSM, especially women, elderly people and others in vulnerable situations».
Around 400 police officers broke into the university located in the country’s capital with tanks and the support of special forces, without complying with the legal procedures for detentions.
The National Human Rights Coordinator (CNDDHH) had demanded that the police clarify the legal situation of those arrested in the intervention at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. «Nothing justifies that people continue to be detained in police facilities,» it said.
Organizations such as Amnesty International have condemned the «disproportionate use of force» and respect for human rights. «The state of emergency does not suspend due process. Detainees must have access to their defense at all times and be provided with interpreters if needed. The prohibition of incommunicado detention and cruel and inhuman treatment is maintained,» the international organization recalled.
