The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, criticized the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on Tuesday for putting «an ideological tinge» on the organization and proposed the creation of a regional trade zone.
«Let us practice with action what we say in our speeches. Because for this type of forum to survive it has to generate hope», he said, adding that the organization cannot have «the character of an ideological club of friends».
Lacalle Pou has affirmed that it is necessary to «move to action» with «small steps» and «not big speeches under titles of solidarity». «Beware of the ideological temptation in international forums,» he warned.
The Uruguayan president, in connection with ideology, pointed out that CELAC has spoken of the condemnation of the «destabilizing actions» in Brazil. «All the countries that are here condemn these actions against democracy», he said, adding that «clearly there are countries that respect neither democracy nor human rights».
