Former Senator Steven Benoit has resigned as Haiti’s prime minister appointed by the transitional council known as the Montana Accord, one year after and without the office having been effectively installed.
«Moving from words to deeds, today I submitted my resignation to the Montana National Transitional Council (CNT) to facilitate future negotiations,» Benoit announced on his Twitter profile, where he shared the missive delivered to the president of this body, James Beltis.
Benoit clarifies in the letter that his departure does not imply an abandonment of the group or that he is renouncing the ideals he represents, but rather that he is doing so to facilitate future negotiations with other «vital sectors» of society.
In this sense, he has expressed some of his concerns, such as the lack of progress in the political and social crisis dragging the island, and has asked the CNT to continue with the negotiations to reach a political agreement.
Later, in an interview with Radio Kiskeya, Benoit called for the resignation of the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, to facilitate a solution to the crisis.
A year ago, the so-called Montana Agreement was created, a sort of two-year transition committee joined by hundreds of political and social organizations in an attempt to overcome the deep crisis at all levels on the island and to strengthen the institutions in view of the holding of elections at the end of that period.
The commission elected Benoit as interim prime minister, while Fritz Alphonse Jean was appointed interim president.
