At least one child has been killed and 13 others injured as a result of exploding mines, many of them abandoned, in various parts of Yemen, the Yemeni Landmine Observatory NGO has reported on its Twitter account.
The child was killed in Hodeida province, specifically in Al Hali, and another was injured in the same detonation, the Observatory has made known on its Twitter account.
The blasts have also injured four Ethiopian migrants, including a woman, in Al Jauf governorate, according to the organization’s casualty count.
Detonations were also reported in the governorates of Sada, Haya and Laj. Three children were wounded in Laj, one of whom is in critical condition.
The devastation and famine caused by the war in Yemen between the government and the Huthi insurgency is compounded by the immense danger posed by abandoned landmines in the country.
From mid-2019 to August 2022, this ordnance has cost the lives of 426 civilians, including 101 children and 22 women. Another 568 have been injured in the same time period, according to Observatory figures.
