Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, top regional officials and hundreds of others attended the funeral in Neumuenster in northern Germany on Sunday in memory of the two teenagers who died after being stabbed to death on a regional train on January 25.
The victims, aged 17 and 19, were students at a vocational school and were stabbed by a 33-year-old man of Palestinian origin who remains in custody. Five other people were injured in this attack, committed on a train traveling from Kiel to Hamburg.
«We will never accept that something like this happens in our country,» Scholz has proclaimed before the funeral, regretting that the two young people were victims of an attack that, according to investigators, did not follow any kind of pattern and was completely random.
Regarding the debate on the repatriation of asylum seekers who see their request for residence rejected, Scholz has insisted that return is «fundamental» to ensure that the system works. «I will do everything in my power to ensure that this is not just a German effort, but that we act together on this in Europe as well,» he has promised.
