An individual has in recent hours murdered two women in Riposto, in the Italian region of Catania, and then took his own life.
The first victim is a 48-year-old woman who was shot while she was in a car near the town’s promenade. The second deceased, aged 50, was in the town’s Roma street and could not be resuscitated despite the efforts of medical personnel, reports ADNKronos news agency.
The suspect subsequently took his own life using a firearm near a police station.
The Italian press claims that the killer had an extramarital affair with the first victim. He has been identified as Salvatore La Motta, 63, brother of a well-known mafioso, Benedetto La Motta, accused of ordering a murder perpetrated in October 2016.
«I am shocked,» said the mayor of the town, Enzo Caragliano. «Our community has nothing to do with the violent image that is being conveyed in the media. I knew neither the victims nor the alleged murderer. Again women are being shot. Again without witnesses,» he lamented.
«No act of violence can be justified, no motivation is ever acceptable. Perhaps one can think of a crazy act, because only pure madness can be behind so much violence,» Caragliano added.
