Ivorian authorities announced Wednesday the reopening of its land borders after two years of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic in an attempt to control illegal migratory crossings.
«This decree fixes the opening of land borders as of Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at midnight,» the Council of Ministers said in a statement, adding that the decision follows the opening of its maritime and air borders due to the «favorable global health situation.»
According to government spokesman Amadou Coulibaly, the reason for reopening the land borders, closed since March 20, 2020, is to put an end to clandestine crossings and control illegal secondary routes.
This measure will therefore make it possible to redirect travelers to official crossings to «ensure better control of the migratory flow», the Ivorian government said in a statement published on its official website.
