The National Liberation Army (ELN) has asked the Colombian government on Wednesday to hand over the remains of guerrilla priest Camilo Torres Restrepo.

The ELN has reported that it has again demanded the location of Torres’ remains in the framework of the peace talks taking place in Mexico with a government delegation.

«This is a great opportunity for (President) Gustavo Petro to demonstrate commitment to memory and to the victims of this armed conflict, of whom Camilo Torres is a symbol of dignity and commitment to the social transformation of the country,» said the head of the ELN delegation, Pablo Beltrán.

«It is time that (Camilo Torres) has a Christian burial and that his memory serves to build a Colombia in peace», he added, adding that this request was already made during the beginning of the peace talks with the former president Juan Manuel Santos without obtaining results in this regard.

In this sense, Beltrán explained that «it is now, when a substantial change in the Colombian State is announced, that we ask President Gustavo Petro to personally lead the task», according to Blu Radio.

Camilo Torres, co-founder of the first sociology faculty in Colombia, was assassinated on February 15, 1966 at the age of 37 and would have been buried by members of the Army in a place that is still unknown in the Santander region, reports ‘El Colombiano’.
