At least two people have been killed and several injured after being hit by a pickup truck in the Canadian city of Amqui, Quebec on Monday.

At around 15.00 local time, a driver hit at least nine people walking along a road, two of whom are seriously injured.

The deceased are two men in their 60s and 70s, according to the police, in statements reported by Global News.

Local authorities are questioning the driver of the van, a 38-year-old man, to determine whether the incident had an intentional or accidental cause, however, several witnesses have assured that it was a voluntary hit-and-run, as reported by the newspaper ‘Le Soleil Numerique’.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has expressed his condolences to the victims and thanked the emergency services »for acting with speed, courage and professionalism».

»My heart goes out today to the people of Amqui, Quebec. As we learn more about the tragic events that have taken place, I will keep all those affected in my thoughts,» he has indicated through a message on his Twitter profile.
