The commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Colonel General Oleksandr Sirski, acknowledged on Monday that the defense of Bajmut »remains difficult» as fears grow among Kiev’s allies that the town could soon fall into Russian hands.
Sirski has acknowledged that »the situation around Bajmut remains difficult» due to new offensives led by Wagner Group mercenary squads. »They are coming from multiple directions, trying to break through our defenses and advance into areas of the city center,» he has reported.
However, Sirski stressed that Ukraine continues to inflict »significant losses» on the enemy, according to the brief statement he provided via his Facebook profile.
Bajmut, in the Donetsk region, has for several weeks been one of the main theater of a war that is now a year old. Ukraine has recently reinforced its defenses, at a time when NATO fears that the city will finally pass into Russian hands.
For Russia, which has recently made significant advances by seizing the enclaves surrounding the town, the city has a special strategic value, since it is from there that a large part of the supplies that Ukraine sends to its troops on the eastern front leave.
