Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay an official visit to Russia from March 20-22, both governments confirmed Friday, as part of deepening bilateral ties and after Beijing presented a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying has indicated that the visit will take place at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as reported by the Chinese news agency Xinhua. The Kremlin has confirmed the invitation extended to Xi and has indicated that during the meetings »several important bilateral documents will be signed».

»During the talks, issues on the further development of the strategic partnership and cooperation between Russia and China will be addressed,» the Russian Presidency said in a statement on its website, adding that »an exchange of ideas in the context of deepening cooperation between Russia and China in the international arena» is also planned.

Xi’s trip will take place weeks after Beijing presented a peace plan for Ukraine composed of twelve proposals in an effort to provide a political solution to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in which it called for a ceasefire on both sides and defended the territorial integrity of all countries.
