U.S. authorities announced Thursday that an explosion at a dairy farm in Texas earlier this week reportedly killed at least 18,000 head of cattle and seriously injured a worker.
»This was the deadliest barn fire for livestock in Texas history and the investigation and cleanup may take some time,» Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said in a statement in which he indicated he does not yet have »all the facts surrounding this disaster.»
»The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and we all want to know what the facts are. There are lessons to be learned and the impact of this fire may influence the immediate area and the industry itself,» he said, while noting that he will inform the public of the details later »so that tragedies like this can be avoided in the future.»
Miller explained that the farm worker was trapped inside one of the buildings after Monday’s explosion and fire, after which she was rescued and taken to a hospital.
Although devastating, I am grateful that there were no further injuries to workers or loss of life,» said the commissioner, who extended his best wishes to the worker and her family.
