Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported Monday that Russian servicemen have managed to arrest in Syria a suspected leader of the Islamic State terrorist group accused of planning several attacks in the Russian regions of Moscow and Novosibirsk.
The Russian intelligence, which identified the man as Nazarov T. M., said that the security forces have managed to »put an end to the illegal activities of one of the leaders of the Islamic State» and clarified that he is a 34-year-old citizen of Tajikistan.
Thus, he has accused him of creating a terrorist cell with the aim of committing acts of »sabotage», as well as attacks, through the use of improvised explosive devices. Among the targets of these attacks would be the national railroad network, as reported by the TASS news agency.
Russian authorities have explained that the alleged terrorist recruited citizens of Tajikistan to join the group and was also in charge of organizing the manufacture, purchase and storage of weapons and explosive material.
»As a result of interaction with foreign partners, Russian forces have managed to identify and detain the suspect on Syrian territory and subsequently transfer him to Russia,» the FSB has pointed out in a statement. Along with him several alleged members of the terrorist group have been detained.
