The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced Tuesday its plans to expand the Eurovision Song Contest brand in Latin America.
The organizer of the contest has announced that Eurovision Song Contest Latin America will be produced by Christer Björkman, Anders Lenhoff, Ola Melzig, Peter Settman and Greg Lipstone of Voxovation, the producers of American Song Contest and Eurovision Song Contest Canada.
The EBU has reported that the 2022 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest generated more than 75 million unique viewers on YouTube from 232 territories worldwide, with Latin American countries among the markets with the best response among non-participating countries. It highlighted Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico, which recorded the highest volume of content viewed.
In this scenario, the European Broadcasting Union has reported that producers will now begin the search for a host city to host the Eurovision Song Contest in Latin America among the best performing Latin American markets in the coming months.
«The Eurovision Song Contest Latin America marks the latest development in the global expansion of the Eurovision Song Contest, as it simultaneously elevates the brand’s legacy and maintains local cultural representation,» he explained, while noting that NBC’s American Song Contest, which ended its eight-week run on May 9, saw an increase in viewership for the grand finale, during which K-pop star AleXa was «crowned» as the winner of the first season.
Separately, the European Broadcasting Union has indicated that Eurovision Song Contest Canada, co-produced with partner Insight Productions (a Boat Rocker company), will debut in 2023.
NEW FANS AROUND THE WORLD EVERY YEAR «Following the launch of the U.S. Festival, and with plans in place for the Eurovision Song Contest in Canada next year, the European Broadcasting Union is delighted to now be working with Voxovation to bring the excitement and magic of the Eurovision Song Contest to Latin America. The unique Eurovision format finds new fans around the world every year and we look forward to expanding the brand in this diverse part of the world,» said Eurovision Song Contest executive supervisor Martin Österdahl.
Speaking on behalf of the Voxovation production team, Peter Settman and Greg Lipstone said, «Fans across Latin America have consistently spoken out for the Eurovision Song Contest brand and Eurovision Song Contest Latin America is the embodiment of that fervent passion, as well as a continuation of the broad vision that we, the production team, have for Eurovision as a global brand.
The EBU has defended that Eurovision «is the world’s largest live music event, with more than 180 million people tuning in to linear and digital channels in 2022», and that the contest has launched the global careers of artists such as the Italian group Maneskin, winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, Celine Dion, ABBA or Julio Iglesias, among others.
