Mike Pence may testify in U.S. Capitol assault investigation
Former President Donald Trump has lost the last appeal filed to prevent his former vice president, Mike Pence, from testifying in the federal investigation that seeks to clarify Trump’s role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. It is the last of several attempts by the former president to prevent Pence from talking about the conversations they had that day, as detailed by CNN.
Trump continues to appeal the decision
Pence initially claimed that his political protection derived from his position allowed him not to appear before the Justice Department, but after a first ruling denying this privilege, he agreed to appear. Trump, however, has continued to appeal this decision and could even take it to the Supreme Court.
A testimony of great interest
The Justice Department subpoenaed Pence in January to request his testimony in the criminal investigation into the former president’s role. The former vice president’s testimony is of great interest to law enforcement authorities, as he is the only witness to the conversations he had with Trump before the assault.
This is not the first time he has been cited by the Department of Justice.
This was not the first time the Justice Department had summoned Pence. In November, the U.S. government judicial body called the former vice president to testify, although he ultimately declined.
