Two years after Philip of Edinburgh’s death
With just under a month to go before the coronation of King Charles III is celebrated in style, this April 9 marks two years since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
A moment of great sorrow for the British royal family
«It is with deep regret that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family joins people around the world in mourning her loss,» Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
Deep sadness at Queen Elizabeth II
A loss that caused a deep sadness in Queen Elizabeth II, who was seen later at her funeral with her head down, wearing strict mourning and even emotional at certain moments. An image that we rarely saw in the monarch.
I would have turned 100 years old in June 2021.
After being discharged from hospital in mid-March 2021, he died on April 9 at Windsor Castle at the age of 99, having failed to overcome the health problems for which he had been admitted weeks earlier. Prince Philip, consort, life companion and unconditional support of Queen Elizabeth II during her long reign, would have turned 100 years old in June 2021 and, with his death, left both the sovereign and the rest of the Royal Family, plunged in the most absolute desolation.
Entered several times
The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital several times over the last decade: in 2011 for a blocked artery, in 2012 for a bladder infection and in 2013 for an abdominal exploration. He underwent hip surgery in 2018 and spent several days in for a «pre-existing condition» at Christmas 2019. His last admission occurred in mid-February, for reasons of «precaution» in view of his already delicate health condition, before the death of what has been the longest serving consort in the history of the British Royal Family.
73 years married
Married for 73 years, the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh had four children, Princes Charles, Andrew, Edward and Princess Anne. Undoubtedly, he was one of the best ambassadors of the Crown, which he represented until the age of 96, becoming one of the closest and most charismatic members of the British Royal Family.
A fundamental part of the events of the British monarchy.
The Duke of Edinburgh was an inseparable part of all the events that have surrounded the British monarchy since the end of World War II.
More than 20,000 official events
The Duke of Edinburgh is credited with more than 20,000 official acts, including 250 visits abroad, which led Philip himself to describe himself as «the world’s most experienced discoverer of plates», displaying a humor that generated more than one headache to the point that the British newspapers had sections specifically dedicated to publishing his lapses and outbursts of tone.
