«A challenge not only in soccer»
Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo said that signing for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr team is a «challenge not only in soccer» and is confident of breaking all records in the country’s league as he has done in Europe, as well as saying he does not care about the fans’ opinion because, according to him, «it is not the end» of his career. Hailed by 30,000 fans
«It’s a challenge, not just soccer, to sign for Al Nassr,» he said at the presentation press conference alongside his new coach, Frenchman Rudi Garcia, and before being cheered by the 30,000 fans at Riyadh’s Mrsool Park stadium.
A «competitive» league
Cristiano Ronaldo stressed that the world of soccer «is very advanced» and declared himself «happy» to play in a «competitive» league like the Arab one. «I’m looking forward to playing, even tomorrow if the coach gives me the opportunity. I’m not worried about what people say, nowadays soccer has evolved and is very competitive. It’s not the end of my career,» he said.
«I came here to win»
Ronaldo stated that he will maintain his competitive level at his new team after succeeding at clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United. «I have broken all the records in Europe and I want to do it here as well. I came here to win. I want to enjoy and smile all together here at Al Nassr,» he said.
«Conveying a different vision of the country»
In his opinion, many people «talk, but know nothing about soccer,» and he pointed out that one of the reasons that prompted him to accept Al Nassr’s offer is to «transmit a different vision of the country and of soccer» in Saudi Arabia.
«Many clubs tried to sign me»
«That’s why I have accepted this challenge. It’s a great opportunity, not only in soccer, to change the mentality of the new generations. Many clubs from Australia, the United States, Portugal tried to sign me. It is my decision, I have been supported by my family, especially my children, we are proud. People in Saudi Arabia love me. The welcome has been spectacular,» he said.
Rudi Garcia: «I hope Cristiano is happy»
For his part, Rudi Garcia declared himself «very happy» to have the Portuguese striker in his squad. «The most important thing is what happens on the field. We need to train and win. I hope Cristiano will be happy playing for Al Nassr,» he wished.
