Rainbow flag
Monday’s World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay in Qatar was interrupted for a moment when a person carrying a rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGTBIQ+ movement, invaded the pitch.
T-shirt with messages
The man who jumped onto the pitch was also wearing a T-shirt with messages of support for Ukraine and women in Iran.
He walked across the pitch
Although the broadcast of the match could barely capture the moment, it was possible to briefly see someone running across the pitch with this flag.
Messages for Ukraine and Iran
Photos posted on social media also showed that the front of the fan’s shirt said ‘Save Ukraine’ and the back said ‘Respect for Iranian women’.
‘One Love’ armband
Before the start of the World Cup, a group of nations planned to wear a multi-coloured captain’s armband with the message ‘One Love’ in a sign of equality and diversity, but had to back down in the face of FIFA’s threat of sanctions, including sporting sanctions.
Stadium security
The man was detained by the security team at the Al Lusail stadium in Doha.
