The president of the Ukrainian nuclear company Energoatom, Petro Kotin, has assured that the European country has enough nuclear fuel reserves to face at least the next two years.
Ukraine suspended its import of Russian nuclear fuel with the outbreak of the war, more than nine months ago, which has raised concerns about the level of the country’s reserves that Kotin himself has tried to nip in the bud.
In this regard, Kotin has acknowledged that Energoatom is collaborating with US-based Westinghouse Electric to promote a Ukrainian nuclear fuel production line of its own, reports UNIAN news agency.
«We already produce fuel cartridge heads and tails that have been licensed by this U.S. company. Then, we will produce half of it ourselves and the other half will be supplied by Westinghouse,» Kotin has detailed.
Ukrainian energy infrastructures have since the beginning of the war, and especially in recent months, been the target of Russian attacks. According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia has destroyed more than 50 percent of the country’s energy capacities.
