The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has supported the initiative to promote greater autonomy for certain regions, but has assured that this proposal will not lead to any region «being left behind».

The key concept is «differentiated autonomy», which Meloni has defined as «a new model of collaboration between the State and the territories», reports ‘La Repubblica’.

This proposal «will never be a pretext to leave part of the territory behind», the Italian leader warned during her participation in an event of the Italy of the Regions, a forum promoted by regions and autonomous provinces held at the Lombardy Palace in Milan.

Meloni also referred to the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR), the plan drawn up by Italy to revive its economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, and stated that «it is no longer enough».

«It does not take into account the impact that the war in Ukraine has had on our economies. More needs to be done at EU level, starting with the energy sector,» he said.

Meloni has also criticized that European countries, including Italy, have chosen to increase dependence on other countries «instead of working to implement measures to strengthen domestic energy production, independence and security.» «Today we are paying for those decisions,» he lamented.
