The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office reported Saturday that at least 16 demonstrators and four police officers were injured in protests in the city of Andahuaylas, in the southern Peruvian department of Apurimac.

Through their official Twitter profile they have confirmed these figures and have called on the population not to use violence in their protests, while reminding the Police that «any action to restore public order must be done within the framework of the law on the use of force».

The organization also demanded the immediate release of the police non-commissioned officer Walter Silvera Obregón who had been detained by the demonstrators, although later it was confirmed that police officers, in plural, had been released. After which it indicated that the case would be investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office.

For the moment it is not known what was the purpose of the protest, but in the previous days the demonstrations registered in the town showed their support to the former president ousted on Wednesday, Pedro Castillo, according to CNN en Español.

The Ombudsman’s Office has said that it is confirming the condition of the people detained at the police station and coordinating with health teams to ensure that the injured receive adequate hospital care.
