The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has made official before the country’s Congress her proposal for constitutional reform to bring forward the presidential elections and hold them in April 2024.

In a letter addressed to the president of the Congress, José Williams, the Peruvian president has requested that the measure be processed in the Andean Parliament «urgently», in order to hold elections as soon as possible, as reported by ‘La República’.

«The President of the Republic, currently in office, elected in the General Elections of 2021, concludes her term of office on July 28, 2024. The congressmen and representatives to the Andean Parliament elected in the General Elections (of) 2021 finish their representation on July 26, 2024», reads the reform proposed by Boluarte and submitted to Congress.

During the day on Sunday, the newly appointed president of Peru announced her intention to propose to the country’s legislative chamber the holding of elections in April 2024, all this in an attempt to appease the violent demonstrations that are taking place in the south of the country demanding the calling of new elections.

Boluarte pointed out that the approval of this law implies constitutional reforms, while his cabinet «will promote, likewise, the agreement in the Congress of the Republic of a law for the Reform of the Political System».

«I invite all political forces, from the regions and provinces, the authorities, the civil society and the Peruvian people to participate in this process so that a wave of democratic will and national responsibility may guide and orient us», he added after criticizing the escalation of political confrontation.

The proposal comes after former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced last Wednesday the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception. His decree, which did not receive any support, ended up leading the Parliament to support a motion of censure against him and his subsequent arrest by the country’s police.

Dina Boluarte, who until then had been his ‘number two’, took over the presidency of Peru, appointing a new ministerial cabinet this weekend.
