At least eleven migrants were injured on Monday after being involved in a traffic accident while crossing a road in Hungary near the Austrian border.
Hungarian police said the vehicle, which overturned, was traveling on a highway near the town of Gyor. The accident occurred after the driver, allegedly a human trafficker, fled from a police checkpoint after refusing to stop the vehicle.
Hungary lies on the Balkan route, often used by refugees and migrants to reach western Europe. Despite a fence on the border with Serbia, over the course of 2022 the number of migrants arriving on Austrian territory has multiplied, according to government data.
Accidents involving vehicles with migrants on board are common in Hungary. In September, a driver and three migrants were killed when their vehicle fell into a river a few kilometers from the Austrian border.
